Many people like to scout around and register their own Domain Name for their future websites. People also think that big brand names like Yahoo, Bigpond and the like would be a safe and reliable place to register a Domain and Web Hosting services.

From personal experience this is far from the case. These big brand names are actually just re-sellers for other companies and often double the price so they can have half. On top of this be very sure to read the fine print. Often they will have terms and conditions that are actually illegal to put with such services.

As a Web Developer who handles many Web Hosting and Domain accounts we have had to deal with several clients who have already signed up with the bug guns and the trouble inherited with these services can usually take weeks to sort out and sometimes they just can't be.

Instances with Yahoo have forced people to go and register a new Domain Name because the Yahoo Domain they had could not be accessed, used, setup or even cancelled. Tech support for these big brands is also non-existent. If you can find someone to talk to or email their replies are completely useless.

I could go on and on about issues with these types of companies who have pushed into the Domain and Hosting market but I think you get the point.

Before signing up for Web Hosting or registering a Domain Name, I recommend talking to someone who deals with these issues on a daily basis to get their advice and opinions. Otherwise you could end up causing yourself and your future web designer a big headache down the track.
