Changing Domain Names

Recently several Dorris Design clients have opted to change their websites' Domain Name because of a business name change or a hard to remember Domain and this has brought several issues to our attention.

If your website currently ranks well in the search engines and you decide to change the Domain name, the search engines will believe a totally new website has appeared with exactly the same content as your old site which in turn will penalise your site and your ranking will drop dramatically.

To avoid loosing your good rankings you need to do a smooth transition of domains. To do this you need to purchase your new domain at least a month or more prior and point the new domain at your website, at the same time as the old one is.

It usually costs about $20 to have a second domain pointing at a website depending on your domain registrar.

Once you have the new domain pointing to your website, you submit it to the search engines and wait for them to pick it up as your secondary domain in about a month.

Once the search engines have picked up on it you can then set it as your primary domain and do what ever you want with the old one, use it as a secondary or just wait for it to expire. For the best results wait a good couple of months though.
