The keys to creating a successful website

Written by Luke Cocks of Dorris Design © 2007

Why do I need a Website?

This article is mainly for business minded people who either:
  • Wish to have a website.
  • Don’t know if they should get a website or not.
  • Have a website but want to know how to use it more effectively.
If you fall into one of those three categories then this article will be of great benefit and should teach you a great deal or at least give you some good ideas for your own business website.

The current state of the Internet

In the year 2000 fifty percent of the Australian population had discovered the potential of the internet for research, shopping, banking and booking purposes. Internet access has grown so rapidly this figure is now over ninety percent.

Over sixty percent of websites online are now business orientated. This trend has only just recently happened within the past few years. It has taken a while for businesses to realise the potential of the internet but it has finally happened and this trend is growing rapidly.

Eighty percent of the time people use search engines to find what they are looking for online. This means they usually aren’t looking for anyone specific and in most cases they are looking for someone who provides a product or service. People these days are more likely to use an online search like Google to find what they need instead of opening the Yellow Pages.

The Bonuses of having a Website

A website can be a wonderful marketing tool for most businesses which can increase profit, bring in more clients and save time, labour and money in a variety of ways.

A Website is also far cheaper than advertising in any other medium such as the Yellow Pages, Radio, TV, Newspapers and Magazines and it can be used for so much more. When combined with other forms of advertising a website has unlimited potential for improved income.

A website could be the most valuable
promotional tool you will ever have.

A website is great for explaining
what your business does

Unlike other methods of advertising a website has an enormous amount of space which you can use to explain everything about your business, it’s goals, services, products, everything.

The main object of a business website is to answer every question a customer might have.

In your business do you get asked the same questions time and time again?
Do people phone you up just to ask these questions every other day?

Then your business could definitely benefit from a website. Just think of the time you could save if you had a website answering all those questions.

Now think about your yellow pages entry or any other type of advertising you do. Instead of calling you up or coming in to see you to ask all these questions, what if you directed customers to your website for further info and all the questions are answered there for them. All your advertising has to do then is get potential customers interested enough to go visit your website.

Don’t chase your customers.
Let your customers come to you by using an effective marketing strategy.
Make your Website your Central Marketing Tool.

Your website can be your ultimate sales person

Take the pitch from your best sales person, refine it and put it on your website. Give your customers all the details necessary to make a sale without ever having to actually talk to them or spend any time explaining things to them.

Then you can even use your website to take the order or booking straight away and even control payment transactions for you. These are the cheapest and easiest sales you could ever make.

Why spend time dealing with every customer trying to sell and explain things to them? Time is money right? Couldn’t you be spending your time more wisely?

Open 24-7, World-Wide

A website means you can be doing business and making sales 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to a market-place that is as large as you want it to be. You can choose to trade locally or you can choose to expand and sell products to a world-wide market.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the reasons why websites have become the focal point of successful marketing strategies for businesses of the 21st century.

It’s safe to say that without a website your business is losing sales to your competitors.

A well thought out, planned and designed website can be the most valuable promotional tool you will ever have.

An increase of customers and revenue isn't guaranteed, it's something that needs to be planned thoroughly. You must decide how best your business could utilise a website and what you want the website to achieve for you.

You must conduct intensive research for a website just like any other planned venture. With the right market research and the right skills you can have a successful website that will greatly enhance your business and the increase in profits will be just proof.

Please keep in mind that a website is a very important marketing device and here at Dorris Design we are very passionate about achieving the desired outcome for every website created because we care about your success.

For this reason we believe every successful website requires a great deal of time and effort from both the designer and the client to tailor your website to your exact needs. It’s like anything. You get out of it what you put in.
